Why did I decide to be an au pair?

Hello!

As promised, this post is about why I decided to be an au pair.

I have always wanted to visit America, and initially I was looking into the CampAmerica program. I had just started sixth form college at the time, and a lot of other students were talking about CampAmerica, and I was intrigued. However when I began to research the program, I came across another program to be an au pair in the states for a year. As I looked more into the possibility I just knew that this program was for me.

So, I read through the requirements. I fit the age range (18-25), I hold a British passport and a full UK driving license. I have more than the required childcare experience - I have been babysitting regularly for multiple different families with children of different ages since I turned 16. All that said, I was also fully aware that I would be half way across the world living with a family who I most likely will have only spoken to over Skype. Considering the furthest away I had ever been to without my parents is to France - and that was only for 5 days - this was a big decision for me to make.

So what made up my mind?

I would spend an entire year in the country that I have always dreamt of visiting. And not just visiting, LIVING there! Plus, I would be caring for children, which has been my passion ever since I started babysitting. Yes, I would be away from my family for a year. Yes, I would be in an unfamiliar country with people who I've only known for a short period of time. Yes, all of this absolutely terrified me, but that is exactly why I'm doing it. If I can prove to myself that can do this, and I can pursue this dream, then I can pursue anything.

I am so excited the finally meet the family that I have been talking to for the past couple of months. I am excited to face challenges, and difficulties, and find a way through them. And I am SO excited to live this dream.

Thank you for reading, and as I said in my post yesterday, if there's anything in particular you would like me to write about to do with my experience so far, leave a comment below.

:)
